Theologian Sam Wells launches Trinity College lecture series and summer book club

By Leigh Anne Williams

Those who enjoyed the online lecture “Reimagining Church” that author and public theologian the Rev. Dr. Sam Wells, offered for the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa’s 125th anniversary series in 2022 have a new opportunity to hear his insights this summer.

Wells’ talk memorably inaugurated a year-long exploration of the theme of “Church Outside the Walls — Humbler Church, Bigger God” created by the Trinity College Divinity Alumni Associates on May 23. Wells, who is vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields church in London (UK), was in Toronto for the event, which was held at St. Anne’s Anglican Church. Trinity has posted a video of the lecture online, and those who view it online will poignantly be able to see a bit of the beauty of that church and its renowned artwork before it was devastated by fire on June 9.

The Divinity Associates are also launching an online summer book club discussing Well’s book A Future Bigger Than the Past: Towards the Renewal of the Church (Canterbury Press). Wells will join the first discussion online on June 27 from the U.K. (Due to the time zone difference the discussion will take place in the morning that day.) Click here to register.

The Rev. Dr. Mary-Cate Garden, Incumbent in the Parish of Huntley in the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa, is president of the Trinity Divinity Alumni Associates. She told Perspective that the association has expanded the format of what is usually a one- or two-day annual conference to include five or six public events planned through the course of the year on the theme of Humbler Church, Bigger God. Those events will be a combination of in-person events in Toronto and online offerings to make the discussions more broadly accessible to people beyond Trinity College and Toronto.
